Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a power-hungry beast, and its appetite is only growing. The Trump administration has set its sights on nuclear reactors as the solution to meet this soaring demand. But here’s where it gets controversial: is this plan even feasible, and more importantly, will local communities accept it? These are the burning questions that linger in the air, as thick as the summer heat in Virginia’s Data Center Alley.
As I traveled through Virginia’s Loudoun and Fairfax counties with Ann Bennett, an activist from the Sierra Club, the landscape told a story of rapid transformation. Cranes loomed over vacant lots, and data centers—some still under construction—stretched as far as the eye could see. ‘Look at that one,’ Ann exclaimed, pointing to a massive structure. ‘It’s mind-boggling!’ Her tone was critical, reflecting her concerns about the unchecked growth of these facilities. ‘That’s the cloud right there,’ she added, her voice tinged with frustration. ‘It’s hard to put into words.’
And she was right. The scene was almost dystopian. Behind newly erected power lines, rows of windowless buildings in shades of grey, cream, and blue lined the straight roads. Massive electrical transformers and construction sites dotted the horizon. Despite it being only June, temperatures had already climbed above 35°C. Meanwhile, residents of Virginia’s affluent cities zipped along Data Center Alley in their air-conditioned SUVs, en route to their offices in Washington D.C. or the nearby airport.
Virginia has emerged as the global epicenter of data centers, thanks to its strategic location near the U.S. capital, affordable land, tax incentives, abundant electricity, and access to undersea cables linking North America to Europe. By the first half of 2025, the state boasted hundreds of data centers with a combined capacity of 6.2 gigawatts (GW). Virginia’s total electricity generation capacity stands at 29 GW, nearly half of which comes from gas-fired power plants. But this reliance on fossil fuels is about to face a challenge.
In January 2025, Donald Trump unveiled Stargate, a staggering $500 billion private investment project aimed at funding a network of new data centers across the U.S. ‘We want to keep AI in this country,’ Trump declared, framing the initiative as a move to maintain America’s competitive edge against China and other global rivals. He acknowledged the immense power requirements of these centers and proposed an intriguing solution: integrating data centers with energy generation facilities. ‘We’ll make it possible for them to produce their own power if they choose,’ he stated. However, this plan has raised eyebrows, especially among environmentalists and communities wary of nuclear energy’s risks.
The fossil fuel industry, a significant financial backer of Trump’s campaign, has taken note of this shift. But here’s the part most people miss: while nuclear power is often touted as a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, it comes with its own set of challenges, including waste management, safety concerns, and public acceptance. Is nuclear energy the silver bullet for AI’s power demands, or are we trading one set of problems for another?
