Saucedo made his MLB debut with the Blue Jays in 2021, but it was with the Mariners that he truly found his groove. His strikeout rate of 21.7% was solid, but it was his ability to induce ground balls at a rate of 55% that really stood out.
But here's where it gets controversial... Saucedo's walk rate of 11% was a bit too high for comfort. While some ground ball pitchers like Camilo Doval and Aaron Bummer have made it work, they also had higher strikeout rates to compensate. Saucedo's combination of strikeouts and grounders was unique, ranking him among the top 10 relievers with a similar ground ball rate between 2023 and '24.
Despite his potential, Saucedo struggled in 2025, with a disappointing 7.43 ERA in just 13 innings. He spent most of the season in the minors, and an injury setback didn't help his cause. However, his performance at Triple-A Tacoma showed glimpses of his talent, with a 2.75 ERA and a 27.9% strikeout rate.
And this is the part most people miss... the Angels' bullpen is a bit of a mystery right now, and Saucedo has a real chance to make an impact. With Robert Stephenson, Drew Pomeranz, and Kirby Yates expected to handle the late innings, and Ben Joyce returning from injury later in the year, there's an opening for Saucedo in the middle innings.
The Angels' current bullpen projection includes only one other lefty, Brock Burke, who had a solid but unspectacular 2022 season. Saucedo could provide a fresh left-handed option, especially if he can improve his walk rate.
