A tragedy has unfolded in Thailand, where a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train, resulting in at least **22 fatalities and approximately 80 injuries.** This devastating event occurred on January 14, 2026, casting a shadow over the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, located 230km (143 miles) northeast of Bangkok. The train was en route from the capital city to Ubon Ratchathani province, carrying a total of 195 passengers.
The accident involved a construction crane falling onto the train, causing it to derail. The impact was particularly severe, with the crane striking two of the three carriages, leading to the tragic loss of life.
Reports indicate that the train was passing beneath a construction site for a high-speed rail line when the crane, which was working overhead, collapsed. The train subsequently hit the fallen crane, and a brief fire erupted. Initially, the reports suggested only four fatalities, but this number quickly escalated to 22, with authorities anticipating a further increase.
Rescue operations are now underway, and the fire has been extinguished.
Local resident Mitr Intrpanya, 54, recounted the horrifying scene, describing a loud noise followed by two explosions. He found the crane resting on the passenger train, with the metal structure appearing to have struck the middle of the second carriage, effectively splitting it in half.
This train route is a very common one, serving densely populated areas of northeast Thailand. Interestingly, this route is part of a high-speed Chinese rail project that has been under construction for about a decade. The high-speed rail is being built on a concrete platform above the existing rail line. The pictures from the scene seem to show the crane, which was working on the concrete columns, had fallen.
This incident raises critical questions about construction safety and the potential risks associated with infrastructure projects near existing transportation routes.
