Imagine winning an award and thanking your biggest critic for making it possible! That's precisely what happened when Jimmy Kimmel snagged the Critics Choice Award for Best Talk Show – and his acceptance speech definitely didn't disappoint.
Last night, at the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles, Jimmy Kimmel Live took home the coveted trophy, and Kimmel, accompanied by his wife and co-head writer Molly McNearney, seized the opportunity to deliver some pointed humor. His target? None other than the man he jokingly referred to as "Donald Jennifer Trump." A witty combination of the former president's name mashed together with a feminine name. But here's where it gets controversial... Was this just a playful jab, or something more?
"A FIFA Peace Prize would have been better, but this is nice, too," Kimmel quipped, setting the tone for his speech. He proceeded to thank McNearney, the show's producers, and the entire late-night community. He specifically acknowledged the support he received after Jimmy Kimmel Live was temporarily suspended last year following some controversial comments that drew criticism. Kimmel emphasized the importance of free speech, stating, "We share this award with our colleagues in late night... Thanks to all the writers and actors and producers and union members... who supported us, who really stepped forward and reminded us that we do not take free speech for granted in this city or in this country. Your actions were important. We appreciate that."
But the real highlight came when Kimmel turned his attention to the former president. "Most of all, I want to thank our President, Donald Jennifer Trump, without whom we would be going home empty-handed tonight," he declared. "Thank you, Mr. President, for all the many ridiculous things you do each and every day. It’s been a banner couple of weeks, and we can’t wait to get back on the air tomorrow night to talk about them. Thank you, everyone.” This statement, dripping with sarcasm, underscored the show's reliance on Trump's antics for comedic material.
Backstage, Kimmel reflected on the past year, describing it as "almost a near-death experience." He clarified, "Of course not literally... But I did feel a little bit like Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn watching their own funeral when all this stuff happened." He expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he received, noting, "We’re like, ‘Oh, boy, when they come after the comedians, this is when we draw the line.’ And we’re very grateful that they drew the line at us.”
It's no secret that Kimmel and Trump have a history of trading barbs. Remember Kimmel’s Alternative Christmas Message to the U.K.? He playfully stated, "I can tell you that, from a fascism perspective, this has been a really great year… Tyranny is booming over here. You may have read in your colorful newspapers that my country’s president would like to shut me up because I don’t adore him in the way he likes to be adored." He further elaborated on the show's temporary suspension, framing it as a "September miracle" that ultimately led to the show's resurgence: "Our show came back stronger than ever… We won, the President lost, and now I’m back on the air every night, giving the most powerful politician on earth a right and richly deserved bollocking.” And this is the part most people miss... Is Kimmel genuinely thankful for the material Trump provides, or is it a deeper commentary on the state of political discourse?
With Kimmel's contract extended until May 2027, audiences can expect plenty more politically charged humor. The show returns tonight, January 5th, featuring Ben Affleck, Erin Doherty, and musical guest Molly Tuttle.
So, what do you think? Is Kimmel's reliance on political humor a brilliant strategy, or is it contributing to the divisiveness of our times? Did Kimmel's joke cross the line, or was it fair game? Share your thoughts in the comments below! We're eager to hear your perspective.
