Libya Achieves Major Public Health Milestone: Trachoma Elimination
TRIPOLI, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a remarkable achievement in global health: Libya has eliminated trachoma as a public health problem, marking a significant milestone in the eastern Mediterranean region.
This achievement is a testament to the country's resilience and dedication to public health, despite facing years of political instability and humanitarian challenges. In a statement, the WHO highlighted that Libya has become the 28th country worldwide and the eighth in the eastern Mediterranean region to achieve this goal.
The journey towards trachoma elimination began with surveys in six southern districts in 2022. These surveys revealed that the prevalence of active trachoma and trichiasis had fallen below the WHO elimination thresholds, except for trichiasis in Wadi Al Hayaa/Ghat. A surgical campaign was launched to address the remaining cases, and a further survey in 2025 confirmed the success of these efforts, with trichiasis prevalence also falling below the threshold.
Trachoma, a contagious bacterial infection caused by Chlamydia trachomatis, spreads through contact with eye discharge from infected individuals. Repeated infections can lead to severe complications, including scarring of the inner eyelid and inward turning of the eyelashes (trichiasis), which can result in painful blindness if left untreated. Libya's national trachoma elimination program played a crucial role in this achievement by integrating surveillance, expanding surgery services, and building the capacity of health workers with local and international partners.
