This milestone builds on an impressive net gain of 285 doctors since the NDP took office in late 2023, according to Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara. “Manitoba is a place where science is respected, patients are treated with dignity, and healthcare is guided by compassion, evidence, and human rights,” Asagwara emphasized at a recent press conference. “This is a historic increase for our province.”
The recruitment efforts gained momentum after the U.S. presidential election in November 2024, with Manitoba positioning itself as an alternative for doctors seeking a more stable and inclusive healthcare environment. Take Dr. Jesse Krikorian, for example. A Michigan-based physician, he moved to Manitoba in 2025 to practice at Winnipeg’s Klinic Community Health. Krikorian, a member of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, cited increasing government interference in U.S. healthcare as a key reason for his move. “I saw the writing on the wall—providing quality care to underserved populations was becoming increasingly difficult,” he explained. In Manitoba, he found professional autonomy, a publicly funded healthcare system, and a focus on care based on need, not profit. “Here, I spend more time with patients and less time battling insurance companies,” he added.
Premier Wab Kinew highlighted Manitoba’s commitment to inclusion and diversity, stating, “We’re proud to keep our doors open to the world, especially when others are closing theirs.” But is this enough to sustain the influx of doctors?
